House Passes $662 Billion Defense Bill

The House has passed a $662 billion defense bill after the White House dropped a veto threat over provisions on handling terrorist suspects.

The vote Wednesday evening was 283-136. In a closed-door meeting, conservative Republicans had expressed some concerns over the provisions, fearing an expanded role for the military in domestic law enforcement.

The bill would authorize money for military personnel, weapons systems, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and national security programs in the Energy Department.

The White House had threatened a veto but was mollified by revisions to the provision mandating military custody for terror suspects.

Our continued defense spending is UNSUSTAINABLE!!! We have bases all over the world, and we can't pay our bills?! We have NOT been in a war since WWII that was a true threat to our national security. Iraq, Vietnam, etc., did we win? Did these countries invade us. Remeber we were told by our government that if we did not fight them over there, we'd have to fight them here?! BS!! We continue to fund defense at war levels, but can't pay our own bills. Take care of our own 1st!! Stay out of other counties!! Defense could easily be cut 25%!! We never dismantled the industrialzed military complex like Ike warned us about!!Speak softly and carry a big stick and STAY out of everybody else's business!!! We can't afford it!! In our young folks lives and money too!!!

Its always so easy to get money for defense in this country, but try to get a jobs bill passed and everyone throws a fit. Maybe if the US quit blowing up countries and rebuilding THEIR infrastructure after WE destroyed it, we'd have more money to rebuild OUR bridges and roads? Oh, that't right we can't afford it.

You mean like the $13T stimulus packages? Unemployment and under-employment is still running at 15% . Still waiting for the "shovel ready" jobs that was supposed to create, how about you? Yeah, I thought so...

No, I mean like the trillions spent in Iraq and Afghanistan on THEIR shovel ready jobs. This country has no problem spending billions and billions on bridges and roads over there, but here in the US we just let them fall into the river, ala Minneapolis. Lesson: Quit starting phoney wars for oil money for the few and start investing here for the many.

Exaggerate much? Here are some REAL numbers for you from today's news: WASHINGTON | Thu Dec 15, 2011 10:00am EST - "The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits dropped to a 3-1/2 year low last week and factory activity in New York state scaled a seven-month high in December, more evidence of a pick-up in economic activity"

Let's not forget, people whose benefits have expired aren't filing for unemployment. The system counts them as employed. Kind of puts THOSE numbers in question too, doesn't it? Besides, the stimuluses were 2 years ago. Things were only continuing to get worse then, if you'll remember.

That was just seasonal employment and folks that have just stopped looking for work i.e. 315,000. I'm not taking the right side, NOR your's. BOTH sides distort numbers and lie to their constituents to make things look better. BOTH partys are bought and paid for . The sooner you and the other blind mice e.g Obama Snake Oil and her other AKAs the better!! We are truly in need of campaign finance reform, so we can get public servants elected and NOT career politicians!1 Gini coeffecient has gone awry x 30 yrs!! Clinton & Bush stripped away safegaurds from 30s, that would've helped prevent the financial meltdown. WAKE UP!! BOTH PARTYS ARE FOR SALE! The next 4 yrs are going to be terrible, thanks to BOTH partys doing the bidding of special interests! and NOT representing the avg citizen/constituents!!!

Well Barlow, the house has passed the jobs bill. If Harry Reid votes it down and Obama vetos it, eitherway, they own it.

Oh God no....NOT ONE AIRCRAFT CARRIER!?!?!?! Herp,'s not like we don't have 12...oh wait. Well, sorry, that's not really enough to enforce the point...first part of the first paragraph on Wikipedia about the U.S. Navy; "The U.S. Navy is the largest in the world; its battle fleet tonnage is greater than that of the next 13 largest navies combined.[4] The U.S. Navy also has the world's largest carrier fleet." Now please, go find something else to fear-monger about.

Another Obama election lie. I will close Gitmo if you elect me? Now Hope N Change is over 100 lies to the American People. Obama could have closed GITMO in 2009 he is the commander and chief?

That falls into the same category as "a little bit pregnant". Either Gitmo is open or it's closed.
