Groups File Suit To Block Georgia Nuclear Plant

Environmental and watchdog groups are suing to block construction of two nuclear reactors in eastern Georgia that would be the nation's first built-from-scratch nuclear power plant in a generation.

The groups say the plant should be blocked until federal regulators approve safety changes prompted by last year's nuclear disaster in Japan.

Twelve groups, including the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, say they plan to file suit Thursday in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission voted 4-1 last week to issue a permit to Atlanta-based Southern Co. to build and operate two new reactors at its Plant Vogtle site south of Augusta.

The NRC last approved construction of a nuclear plant in 1978.

    This groups need to be informed that the nuclear reactors in Japan were built many years ago and are of a totally different design. The Japanese were planning to shut down these reactors due to their age. Nuclear reactor design today is altogether different and much, much safer. So by these groups comparing the Georgia reactor to the Japanese ones is totally wrong.

    So the NRC approves this reactor since it incorporated the features it needed to prove it could not duplicate the failures in Japan....Did someone not tell this libterd group about the Westinghouse Web site for the AP1000? Are their fingers broke? Nope, this is not about safe nuclear energy, its about, environmental whakos period. This is a posturing and delay mechanism to run up costs on the project, hey, its what libterds do, complain, scream, protest, sue....but no solutions, never do. This is the web site so you can make up your own mind instead of having these idiots to it for you;

    Can't burn oil. Can't burn coal. Can't burn uranium. Just sit back and breathe Mexican and Chinese smoke. The wonders of the enviro-Luddite leisure class.

    That'll show um' guys! Way to fight the good fight and keep us relying on that oil from the middle-east. God forbid we use a technology that has been proved safe time and time again instead of relying on a antiquated technology that harms the enviornment more every day an a nuclear power plant will do in it's entire lifetime. In this sue happy country I really wish you could sue somebody for being stupid and holding up progress because of draconian and irresponsible beliefs.

      You can. You have to sue the attorney for filing a "frivolous lawsuit". The trouble with that is you have to be an attorney.

        The other problem is that the frivolous lawsuit suit becomes another frivolous suit.

    Here we go again, the few try to speak for the many. What a waste of resources, there are people in dire need of attention right here in the US. But these enviro type are trying to impose their will on advancement. It's just sad....

      I already saw the story and thought they were coming. Someday, someone, other than me will realize that the reason our energy prices are through the roof is that our government, and their hired Anti Nuke groups that are run by progressive liberals, have shot this countries goal of being energy independent. They have killed 4 coal fired generators already with regulations and protests, now this. So, let me get this right, we have to buy our oil from other countries even if we have it in our own country, we cannot even build a pipeline that produce domestic oil from Canada, We cannot drill in the gulf or off shore, not even for natural gas, solar companies are going bankrupt, people are protesting the answer is, just don't use any? Yet why do these hypocrits that drive to using gas, fly to using aircraft fuel, sit at home using electricity, using heat and air, waiting for the opportunity to go against anything that would make America makes its own power? There answer is and has been like Solyndra; Energy Conversion Devices (ECD), based in Auburn Hills, MI, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and intends to sell its assets, including its main subsidiary United Solar Ovonic (Uni-Solar).

        What do you think happened in Japan? I'm cognizant of how well the Japanese responded, much better than Ray Nagin did in New Orleans. Safe? You're safe prior to conception and after your funeral.

        Were you aware that the new reactor design is not like the ones in China? Did you know this info is already available on the internet? You defending this group just affirms how out of touch you are with the situtation. The group wants to delay it period. That is their purpose, run the project cost up with lawsuits and stop works to bankrupt it. Its was they did 28 years ago, its what they are doing now.

        Yeah, we really need to account for a major earthquake and a huge tsunami in Georgia. It's ok though, they're going to happen on 12-23-12 so the plants won't be built yet.
