Giffords' Resignation Opens Up Race For Ariz. Seat

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' decision to step down from her congressional seat opens up a wide-open race to fill her spot in her southeastern Arizona district.

It will set up not one but two entire elections cycles, with new congressional lines in each thanks to congressional redistricting.

Gov. Jan Brewer will call a special primary election sometime in April and then a general election in June to fill Gifford's seat in the 8th Congressional District. That will be followed by a regular primary and general election for the new 2nd District.

The three-term Democrat was widely considered a shoo-in for re-election because of her tragic shooting at a Tucson constituent meeting a year ago.

Her recovery was just short of miraculous, but in the end she decided she couldn't run again.

It's about time. I think she is lucky to have survived and it's a miracle that she's able to live fairly normally again, but she was out of commission because of this for how long? She should have been replaced. Shortly after it happened.

It is a terrible tragedy, and by God's grace she is alive. However, she is unfit to serve, and I think it was a good decision for her to step down.

I'm so glad so stepped down. Now maybe the media will stop talking about her!

CNN (the Clinton News Network) is going berserk over this. I'm sure plans for the TV movie are in the works. Her Highness Oprah would be executive producer, but there is a problem, and it is obvious.

She is an incredible lady. This makes me sad, but she needs to take the time to heal.
