More U.S. Drilling Didn't Drop Gas Price

A statistical analysis over 36 years suggests that more domestic oil drilling is not the answer to high gasoline prices.

The analysis of monthly, inflation-adjusted gasoline prices and U.S. domestic oil production by The Associated Press shows no statistical correlation between how much oil comes out of U.S. wells and the price at the pump.

If more domestic oil drilling worked, the price at the pump would be about $2 a gallon now. Instead, prices are the highest ever for March.

Sometimes prices increase as American drilling ramps up. Since February 2009, U.S. oil production has increased 15 percent when seasonally adjusted. Prices in those three years went from $2.07 per gallon to $3.58.

The statistics directly contradict the title of GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's 2008 book "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less," as well as claims made on the campaign trail by the GOP presidential candidates.

I miss G.W Bush's price at only $1.61 per gallon at the gas pump. The month he left office as President. Check the US Gas Price Charts for the facts. Thats if you want the truth & facts? Without the spin!

What was the price the other 94 months of his terms? His gas peaked at over $5.00 per gal on the west coast and over $4.80 on the east. You seem to have omitted those numbers. No problem, desperation is a repug tactic.

The GOP is blaming Obama for "record high" prices. First of all, these aren't record highs. The record highs were achieved under G.W. Bush in the summer of 2008. Second, back then, Bush had no magic bullet to fire that would bring down prices and that was A-OK with the GOP. So why is there now a manufactured expectation that Obama has such power? Third, does it REALLY make sense that Obama WANTS prices to go up? In an election year? Really? Plus, drilling in the U.S. has gone UP under this president! Common sense and critical thinking skills. They're beautiful things folks when they're actually used.

The US exported 430,000 barrels of gasoline per day than it imported in September 2011. Drilling more simply means more profits for oil corps and less inventory for the US in terms of crude reserves. How can further drilling reduce gas prices if WE ARE ALREADY EXPORTING 430,000 barrels of gasoline per day? More drilling = more gasoline = more exports to other countries = less crude reserves. How long will it take the Regressive Republican Party to realize they are being played as dupes by the oil industry?

The article reflects the Republican profound belief in false narratives. They really believe as a party the answer to lower gas prices is "drill, baby, drill." Sarah Palin used to shout it out. Newt Gingrich wrote an entire book about it based on false premises, faulty logic, and misinformation. Of course, the problem is with the Republicans the truth will not set them free, as they ignore facts. They will just keep on believing what they believe because it feels good. It is rhetoric and not factual commentary that interests Republicans. As long as something has the saccharine-like taste of being truthful and is simplistic enough to fit on a bumper sticker they believe it.

I saw one on a new 2011 Ford Exployer in Roanoke Rapids yesterday, it appeared to be a brand new sticker, with Obama 2008! Looks like some people saved their stickers and are using them in 2012.

This isn't a conclusive or honesthonest fact check. It's the Associated Press for crying out loud. Shame on WITN for not having the journalistic curiosity to determine this is not a sraight-up analysis.

The only way the GOP can get votes is to throw the red meat to the low-information electorate. This is why Faux is the "news" of choice for those voters. Never mind state ID's, I wish voters had to answer a few basic knowledge questions before being allowed into the voting booth.

If you had actually read the article, you would see that the title is an appropriate counter to Republican claims that drilling WILL bring prices down. You want to call Factcheck? Call it on the GOP.

...for this analysis. The AP is an Obama team player, trying to do all it can to manipulate voters. The point is not drilling per se, but utilizing the vast oil resources in the continental U.S. Don't listen to the libs who post here with their pro Obama perspective.

Drill, baby drill turned into Spill, baby spill in the Gulf. It is time to transition to safe clean alternative energy sources. Wind, solar, wave energy, geothermal and second generation biofuels made from algae, cellulose and waste are the future. Biofuels can now be made from waste or trash. Every landfill in the country can not be converted to produce biofuels, energy (methane) and raw materials for new products. Let's produce local fuel with local labor and end the oil monopoly on transportation fuels. Bring on the electric, flex-fuel, hybrid, CNG, LNG and hydrogen fueled vehicles.

the analysis doesn't mention how much the demand iincreased during that same time period. Thus making the story factually worthless. Come on witn, just b/c the AP produces the story doesn't make it accurate.

The only way to cut gas prices to $2.50 a gallon - is to drive a car that gets double the gas mileage. This is what Obama's new MPG requirements will do. The side benefit, less money being sent to the Middle East.
  • by Speculators control price! Location: usa on Mar 21, 2012 at 02:08 PM
YES, believe it or not, oil/gas prices are NOT controlled by: Obama, your momma, congress or anyone else, BUT speculators and the world commodity markets!! Many idiots here will believe/say what the pundits and politicians tell them, but facts are facts. The pipeline will NOT lower prices, because they will sell it for the highest price they can get! Wouldn't you? The keystone pipeline will bring a few jobs while it's being built and to maintain/monitor it, BUT it WILL NOT LOWER PRICES!! They will sell it for the highest price they can get. It's called a market remember??!!Sure wish we could develop cheap hydrogen supplies. It could be used in all internal combustion engines, and only produces H2O once burned!! Oil companies & speculators would probably control that too!!

I love the cons on here who are all about some free enterprise and capitalism.....except, of course, when it comes to commodities that businesses (in this case, big oil) can make more $ selling overseas than here in the US. I knew you folks didn't understand what socialism or communism were, it is obvious now that your understanding of capitalism is almost as lacking. Of course, instead of accepting the facts they will lambast the origins of the report, bemoan the "lamestream" media and spew forth their increasingly ridiculous Obama conspiracy theories.
