Kerry In Middle East To Assist With Crisis In Gaza

(NBC News) Loud explosions and black smoke hover over Gaza this morning as fighting continues.

In Egypt, Secretary of State John Kerry reports some progress toward a peace deal.

"Israel has accepted that ceasefire proposal. So only Hamas now needs to make the decision to spare innocent civilians from this violence," Kerry said.

Palestinians claim 570 people, including women and children, were killed in the latest round of violence.

Israel says Hamas militants have fired more than 2,000 rockets.

From Egypt, Kerry and the head of the United Nations are trying to broker a cease-fire then deal with the underlying issues between Israel and the Palestinians. "Gaza is an open wound and band aid won't help," said U.N. Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon.
