ACT Scores Show 3 In 10 High School Grads Lagging

Nearly three in 10 recent graduates who took the ACT college entrance exam failed to meet a single benchmark that predicts they are ready for college.

Still, members of the high school class of 2011 posted a slight gain on the ACT exam and 25 percent of ACT test-takers met the college-readiness standard in the four core subjects of English, math, reading and science. That restores the national average to where it was in 2009.

Scores for minority students, excluding Asian Americans, were generally short of the national average.

Only 4 percent of black students met the college-readiness standards for all four subjects, compared to 31 percent for whites, 15 percent for Pacific Islanders, and 11 percent for Hispanics and American Indians.

By contrast, 41 percent of Asian Americans topped the preparedness standards in all four subjects.

Policymakers are calling for more rigorous high school courses.

If my plumbing backs up I want a plumber to fix it not an English major. I want a licensed electrician to wire my house not an Econ major. The fastest sector in Community Colleges population used to be University degreeded students going back to CC to learn a usable skill to find a job

I agree with you Peter. The troubling thing here is a high segment of the US population is still attending college despite not having the scores for it. However it would be interesting to see what the scores were two decades ago and one decade ago as well.

Humor me here! WITN: you guys could help! What were ACT scores in the years during the thick of Vietnam's war? There was a lot of stress across the board and country during this time frame with the 2 front war. Deaths and prices raising etc. How about a side by side numbers figure of 1973-75 and 09
