Police say a car bomb has exploded outside a small NATO military base in Kandahar city in southern Afghanistan.
The police commander for southern Afghanistan, Gen. Shafiq Afzali, says the blast was in a parking lot used by Afghans visiting Camp Nathan Smith. The base houses a few hundred Canadian soldiers, American military police and U.S. and Canadian government employees working on development projects.
Information on casualties was not immediately available.
People reached by phone inside Camp Nathan Smith said they had been ordered into bunkers. They spoke anonymously because details of the attack had not been released.
