Oil Continues To Pour From Gulf Well, Fix At Least Week Away

Another week of oil pouring from the seafloor. Concrete and metal boxes are being built to siphon the oil gushing from the blown out well into the Gulf of Mexico. But BP PLC says they won't be in place for at least six days, and the system has never been tried at such depths.

Dead sea turtles are washing ashore and the massive rust-colored slick continues to swell. More than 6,800 square miles of federal fishing area have been closed, just as the spring season begins.

The rig exploded April 20, killing 11 people. A blowout preventer should have stopped the flow, but the mechanism failed. Chemical dispersants meant to break up the oil have had little success. The oil could keep gushing for months until a second well can be dug to cut off the first.

The slick also was precariously close to a key shipping lane that feeds goods and materials to the interior of the U.S. by the Mississippi River, and shipping could soon be limited.

The Coast Guard would be there anyway, that is part of the duties. Gene taylor is a fool, judging that spill from a plane is impossible. Ok, there was a fed representative there, he has watched and reported. what has the president done for this, nothing but make pretty speechs. Oh and gee, the time square bomber is an alien, not a right winger, so sorry your little fantasy of tea party, ring wing, talk radio listening is just a dream.

anon-Who do you think commands the Coast Guard?
  • by NS Location: Greenville on May 3, 2010 at 04:01 PM
Anon, there has been a Fed. representative on site since the second day, when BP was still telling us this was "no big deal". Gene Taylor, the Rep. Representative from Miss. said just yesterday, that it wasn't that bad-that's what he saw from his plane window. Obama has already been there and not just flown over. Trying to spin this against the present admin. isn't going to work-the people know. There is no Arabian Horse man on duty this time. Palin has "tweetied" once-but said nothing else-Steele, nothing-In my book, that not only makes them wrong, but cowards!

and once we find out that there was no greenpeace involvement, I guess OSOC will still blame it on someone other than the people that self-regulate. Accidents happen, it is just really unfortunate that this accident will be the biggest ecological disaster since that one up in Alaska, you know, Palin and all. Keep dreaming about greenpeace terrorism OSOC, and keep listening to Limbaugh, what else does he tell you to think? Oxycontin and hookers?

Well I own my house, and I'm not selling my car, do I use gas and oil yes, just like everyone else. OSOC-I agree with you, somethings weird about it!Obama hasn't done ANYTHING to help that region, anything done is by the Coast Guard or the states themselves. All he's done is tour the area. This is obama's hurricane test, and he's failing worse then bush did on his. BP isn't be protected by the GOP, even if they were, dem;s have no right to fuss, obama took money from big banks and then turned on them. But ns I will echo what you wrote, we have all lost in this case.

Mr.American, that is my observatons as well. Look at the history of oil platforms in the Gulf, thousands of them. They are designed to be safe, explosion proof and have a record to support it. So, how and what made the explosion? We have seen whaling vessels get rammed by GreenPeace....would someone blow up an oil well, I say this is very suspicious since it actually exploded and san...not easy to do. Even hurricanes couldn't do that.

JB-With all the tragedy this is causing, all you have to say is some wise crack? Tell me again how "caring" you Obama haters are. This is BP-one of the "Big businesses" protected by their Republican "good ole boy network"-already passing out waivers to limit their costs. If you don't think people will start taking another look at who is on whose side-you are mistaken.

I hope America or BP finds out how and why this happened. Was this intentional? Sounds like we might need more tighter security on protecting these oil wells. It wouldn't surprise me.We NEED to be Independent.

Why can't Obozo just wave his hand and make it go away?
  • by NS Location: Greenville on May 3, 2010 at 08:03 AM
BP was caught passing out "waivers" in Alabama to cap their liability at $5,000. The AG made them stop-This thing is called a volcano of oil spewing-this is heart breaking-How much can La. take?
