Elizabeth City Residents React To Crash

A town and a neighborhood is in shock over a tragedy that hits close to home.

Maxine Ferrell lives across the street from the home of Darren Hicks. Hicks was one of five U.S. Coast Guard members from Elizabeth City involved in a helicopter crash in Utah on Wednesday. "I'm sorry to hear about it. I hope everything is ok with him. And, we'd love to have him back home."

Cliff Ferrell calls him a brave man. "He had a lot of extensive training and the Coast Guard will miss him if he can't come back."

Hicks is a rescue diver for the U.S. Coast Guard according to some neighbors, and they say he would often talk about his missions, trying to rescue people.

A helicopter rescue team from Utah flew all five eastern Carolina crew members to safety. One crew member is listed in critical condition, two in serious condition, and two are said to suffer minor injuries.

Officials still don't know the cause of the crash.

Sad news. Just curious if anyone knows why a NC based CG chopper was in Utah?
