The Price Of Love

The economy may be coming around but Americans are still not willing to pay much more to show how much they care this Valentine's day.

A new survey from the National Retail Federation shows lovers will likely spend just over $100 on Valentine's gifts, up only about .50 cents from a year ago. And while flowers, candy and cards are still popular, research finds the gifts are falling on the practical side this year.

Does anyone think the ex-wife would be mad if I sent her a bag of dog poop?

Anonymous at 4:43AM must be a man, because Valentine's Day is only stupid to us, and then only when we're single. And Valentine's Day is set because it's named for St. Valentine, and there's more to all that than just candy and roses, but you can read up on all that over at Wikipedia if you're interested. Anonymous does have a point: show love year-round. I've been married for almost four years now but I still feel like a newlywed and let my wife know how I feel every day -- every time we talk. Still, despite that, she likes that I do a little something extra on Valentine's Day. It doesn't just have to do with expensive gifts. I buy my wife a heart-shaped box of chocolates and/or a red rose (just one, they're expensive) every year, but I also do other things. I'm going to cook her something special, but I'm still working out what (and she reads, so even if I'd decided, I probably wouldn't post it).

Why celebrate valentines day just this one day a year, when valentines day could be everyday (loving and caring toward your spouse). We don't need this one day dictating valentines day. Nothing but a money scheme. Any day of the year could be valentines day for you, and it could be as Many days a year as you like. And vday doesn't have to be about expensive dinners, roses, chocolates and stuffed animals holding stuffed hearts. Stupid holiday.
