Fish Oil Shows Promise In Preventing Psychosis

A preliminary study suggests a cheap, easy-to-find supplement could help young people with signs of mental illness from descending into schizophrenia.

More research is needed to determine if fish oil can really prevent the disease. It's cause remains unknown.

In the Austrian study, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, 41 patients were instructed to take four fish oil pills a day for three months. Forty other patients were given placebos. After a year of monitoring, two of the fish oil patients had become psychotic, while 11 of those on dummy pills were completely out of touch with reality.

One hypothesis of the cause of schizophrenia is that people with the disease don't process fatty acids correctly, leading to damaged brain cells.

The researchers speculate the Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil could help brain cells repair and stabilize.

Omega 3, 6, & 9 are very important for a number of diseases - both treatment & prevention. Diet is severely compromised in this culture because most ppl are too lazy to buy real food to make real meals in a balanced fashion. Wild caught ocean fish is your best source: Salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, sardines. Shark & hallibut oil are recommended for auto-immune inflammatory diseases, but idk where to find those, try as I might. Cod liver, salmon, etc is easy to find. Udo's Choice oils (a combo of fish, flax, & more) is the current recommendation for helping ADHD, ADD, & similar. I found hemp oil in my health food store, which has Omega 3 & 6 (flax doesnt agree w/ me for some reason). Evening Primrose oil is another good source, & excellent for women. The research on this is absolutely valid. Buy high omega-3 cage free eggs too, if you can. One thing for certain, it can't hurt to try it & it's something your body needs anyway.

Mom, best of luck to your son. Anxiety and depression runs in my family, I've never heard of this as a cure but I'll sure look into it further. Mood disorders are nothing to take lightly, I know from personal experience. Hopefully they're on to something with this Fish Oil find....best wishes.

My son was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (Mood Disorder, NOS), and we are trying the fish oil. We really haven't seen an improvement as of yet, and have been using them for almost a year now. The capsules are extremely large and he takes 4 per day. At first we tried to break them open and "hide" the oil in a little orange juice or soda, but who wants fishy oj? It is very pungent. The fish oil has many health benefits, so we will continue to take it and hope it helps with his mood problems.
