The Marine Expeditionary Unit based in Eastern Carolina "established the first significant Marine presence on the ground" with its arrival Tuesday in Haiti.

Helicopters from the 22nd MEU landed at the ruined Presidential Palace Tuesday morning, carrying bottled water and other supplies.

The USS Bataan arrived Monday, according to a press release from the Marine Corps. It said the Marines and Navy conducted reconnaissance and assessment flights on Monday to figure out how to best help the relief efforts of the U.S. Military in Haiti.

“We are here to support the Haitian people in an area that has been hard hit by this disaster.” said 22nd MEU commanding officer, Col. Gareth F. Brandl. “As relief operations continue, we will further assess the needs of people in the area and refine how we can best support them with the capabilities we bring.”

The Marines say the added bonus of the 22nd MEU is that they can work off the USS Bataan without further taxing the stressed infrastructure on the mainland of Haiti.

Another 130 Lejeune-based Marines part of a task force that was headed to Africa will be deploying to Haiti now as well.

The 2,000 Marines join the 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, part of the US Military response. Airborne leaders say they've been able to deliver food to only about half of the 50,000 people in a makeshift camp overlooking Port-Au-Prince.

There are fears that if aid is not delivered quickly, sporadic violence and looting will become widespread.
