WILMINGTON, Del. -- Vice President Joe Biden remembers his mother as a comfort, a defender and a teacher of American values.

Jean Biden died Friday after falling ill in recent days. She was 92.

In a statement, the vice president said she died in Wilmington surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Joe Biden says his parents taught their children equality, honor and "the dignity of hard work."

In his autobiography, he recalled his mother defending him when a nun chided him for his stutter.

He says his mother told the nun she would "come back and rip that bonnet off" her head if the nun ever spoke to her son like that again.

The vice president says that when his wife and daughter died in a car crash, his mother told him that "God sends no cross that you cannot bear."

Jean Biden had a daughter and two other sons.

She also had 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

BTW William, I am Republican, Conservative and still believe in a civil society. Disgusting comments attempting to bring politics into this are not civil discourse.

you mean we should be as cival as the remarks of Danny Glover following the death of Ronald Reagan.. or should we be as cival as they way things were at the Paul Wellstone memorial...or what about following the Death of Ted Kennedy using that to promote the coming healthcare bill. which of these levels of civility are you referring to mr hypocrite?

Great comments from the anonymous republican fans. It shows just how civilized we really are as a society. I'm not sure if the comment itself is worse or the fact that whoever says it could probably justify it to the face of the bereaved while smiling at him. If you don't care, that's fine, just try to be a little civil about it. I may say the same about you when you lose a loved one. That is okay isn't it?
