A judge has ruled that California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has abused his discretion by ordering furloughs of state workers.
The Alameda County Superior Court judge says the administration must halt the furloughs, which are meant to ease the Golden State's fiscal crisis, for workers represented by three unions that brought the case. It's not clear how the decision will apply to other state employees.
The judge says Schwarzenegger's claims that furloughs were necessary to help deal with the fiscal crisis rang hollow after the Legislature approved a state budget.
The governor's office says it will appeal the decision and that there's "no reason why state workers should be shielded from the same economic reality that the rest of the state faces."
