Dutch Tourist Says He Stopped Detroit Plane Attack

A Dutch tourist says he heard a pop, saw smoke and climbed over seats to stop a man from trying to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight headed to Detroit.

Jasper Schuringa of Amsterdam told CNN on Saturday that he grabbed a burning object, helped put out the fire with his hands and subdued the man, who has been identified as a Nigerian native, Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab. He says passengers screamed but the suspect remained silent during the incident Friday.

Schuringa described Mutallab as "very afraid." He says there was no struggle as other passengers and crew also rushed to stop him.

Schuringa says he never thought about his own safety. He says he reacted "to try to save the plane."

He spoke to CNN from Miami where he was on vacation with friends.

My heart felt thanks to the Dutch man who saved the plane and its passengers~!! It's such a shame that the security is so poor that this could actually be still happening............

I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would be going to Detroit. What complete dump! Detroit is like Oak City, NC times 2000. Were the Dutch people foreign aid workers going there to help third world minded residents of Detroit?

Sounds like the bomb was a dud. Normally a bomb explodes, not catch fire and burn. The pop was probably the detonator going off. Not to say that he didn't do something, he reacted like most people would this day and time, but the 200 people were more than likely saved by a bomb that didn't detonate.

It took a Dutch tourist to try and do something that security could not do.Whats wrong with the United State of OBAMA.

Jasper took matters in his own hands and saved over 200 people.I hope the President invites him to the whitehouse, but this would send a message of taking matters in your own hands, they don,t want that.

I bet that if YOU had been on that plane, not the hero of course, that you'd still be talking about it! What's wrong with you? I agree with Whitney, your negativity is disgusting! Get a life so that you stop bashing other people!
