Norwegian news agency NTB says the top United Nations official in Afghanistan is stepping down from his post.
NTB quotes Norwegian diplomat Kai Eide as saying that he has asked Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to begin looking for a replacement. He says there was "no drama" involved in the decision as his term of office is due to end in a few months.
Eide, who heads the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, has been criticized recently for his handling of the October election in Afghanistan, which was marred by allegations of corruption.
He told NTB Friday that the criticism was not connected to his decision to step down. No other details were immediately available.
