Laid-Off Workers Face Expiration Of Health Benefit

A potential health care crisis is looming for thousands of unemployed Americans.

A federal subsidy to the COBRA plan ends today. COBRA is the program that allows workers to keep their company's health insurance plan after they leave their job.

The economic stimulus bill President Barack Obama signed in February cut the cost of COBRA by 65 percent for workers laid off after Sept. 1 of last year. The aim was to keep the ranks of the uninsured from exploding as unemployment moved toward double digits. But the discount lasted only nine months. Now, many still out of work are looking at a significant jump in costs.

A report being released today by the advocacy group Families USA finds that unemployed families who lose the COBRA subsidy will see their premiums increase from $389 per month to $1,111 per month, on average.

Barlow, kind of early for mixed koolaid. What horror stories are you referring to? I spent hours trying to find one where an insurance denied a treatment or a hospital denied a treatment. Also, so you really think the government will do a better job that the private industry? Sounds to me "If I call in the next 10 minutes, you will throw another one absolutely free" But, I know, I got to call now. Take it easy on the snake oil....it shows.

SnakeOil: Yea, its included alright! LOL. You've been watching too many Billy Mays reruns. We're going to have health care reform and I hope eventually its a right, not "for profit". The insurance companies control who gets care now. There are countless horror stories about people getting "shut off" just when they need it. Again, the insurance companies aren't so profitable and powerful because they are taking care of your health, it's because they are taking care of theirs. They are nothing but middlemen.

Barlow, we already pay for this, its included. I hope you found a better policy by now since last you posted, you were paying too much. We don't want a national health plan, we want the one we have fixed. Thats the problem with the liberal, feel gooders, they want to reinvent it so it costs too much, controls what we can do and gives it away to people that don't belong in the country to begin with. People are out of jobs due to liberal control of both houses and the presidency. As long as the spending is out of control, companies will cut back on employment. It happened during the Jimmy Carter years. I know you will just blame Bush for all that is wrong, but, the new guy has been running the show for 11 months, both houses have been running the show for 3 years.

We don't have a national health plan so these people, through no fault of their own, are going to the emergency room when they get sick along with all the illegal aliens in this country. Hold onto your wallet because your insurance premiums are about to be jacked up again.

"A potential health care crisis is looming for thousands of unemployed Americans." Really? There is a crisis looming for everyone if Obama has his way.
