Officials: Mom Gave Missing Fla. Infant To Sitter

Authorities say the mother of a missing Florida 7-month-old secretly turned her over to her baby sitter in the middle of the night.

Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock said Thursday that infant Shannon Dedrick was found alive in a box under baby sitter Susan Elizabeth Baker's bed. Investigators have been searching for her since her parents reported her missing Saturday.

Haddock says Baker asked mom Chrystina Lynn Mercer on Friday if she could have custody of Shannon. He says Mercer brought the infant to Baker's house early Saturday, about 10 hours before she was reported missing.

Haddock says Mercer and Baker each face several charges.

Previous Story

Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock said early Thursday that investigators found 7-month-old Shannon Dedrick in a box at Susan Elizabeth Baker's home near Chipley, a rural Panhandle town in Florida. The child had been missing for five days.

Haddock said deputies are working to charge Baker, James Arthur Baker and Chrystina Lynn Mercer. Haddock wouldn't provide details. He said more information would be released soon.

Her parents reported Shannon missing Saturday afternoon. Haddock said authorities don't believe the father was involved. He said Susan Baker and the father are related.

There is no way this baby could have survived 5 days under a bed without water or food. These people are pathetic. Monsters like this should not even be around children.

the babysitter had a missing stepson that had not been found yet, the mom was an idiot, and a criminal. It is heartbreaking and the mom needs to be put in jail and neither should be allowed children ever.

If the mom didn't want the child and a caring responsible person did, why not just do it legally? Why give it away and then report it missing ? Weird !!
