Boy Playing In Backyard Attacked By Deer

A 7-year-old Ohio boy playing a game of backyard football was tackled by a deer.

Brandon Hiles says he encountered the buck when the ball rolled into woods while he was playing with friends Saturday in Wintersville, about 125 miles east of Columbus. The boy says the buck ran at him and flipped him with its horns, leaving bruises and a gash. His 9-year-old friend Wyatt Pugh beat the deer with a stick to make it go away.

Wintersville Police Officer Art Fowler Jr. says there were actually two bucks in the area gearing for a fight, and Brandon was attacked when he inadvertently got between them.

I agree with Jeff. Good for the boys friend helping his buddy out. I'm sure it took some courage for a 7 year old to go at a grown deer that just attacked his friend. I don't know if could have done it and I'm 25. :)

Hey, I still need a job. You reported this as a deer. It is an Elk. Maybe you could only find an elk picture. I would have found a deer picture. Accurate reporting. That is what I would do. Can I have a job?

The friend should get a Nobel Peace prize and let's give the victim a purple heart. Seriously. It's an amazing story of the courage in our youth. One friend helping another in need.

To the people commenting on the deer and pitt co,, read the whole story.. It happened in OHIO, not NC.. and deer are different shapes, sizes and colors there.

The point of this story is missed. A very big lesson can be learned from it. It is amazing that the 9 year old boy was brave enough to pick up a stick and beat the deer off the younger boy. Most kids that age would have ran off looking for an adult. Had he not stood beside his friend, his friend could have been killed. The 9 year old is a hero and should be treated as one. That is the type of stuff a "real" friend does.

The City of Greenville needs to let people hunt in the city limits there are too many deer getting inbread in the city. We need a bow season in the city!! ((yes I realize that this didn't happen in Pitt Co. but there are a lot of deer in the city limits))

Studies have shown that hunting bucks only increases the deer population by making room for does and fawns.

Phil, there is not really to many deer in pitt co or other areas, I am a hunter but there is less deer now than 15 years ago. It seem there is more due to the development outside of towns. The deer are running out of room!
