Increase In Autism Cases May Be Attributed To Greater Awareness

Federal health officials say greater awareness, broader definitions and spotting autism in younger children may explain some of the increase in the proportion of children with disorders.

Two new government studies indicate about 1 in 100 children have autism disorders, higher than a previous estimate of 1 in 150. Dr. Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, says the main concern is determining whether there's a "true increase" in the numbers.

The new estimate would mean about 673,000 American children have autism. Previous estimates put the number at about 560,000. One of the studies stems from the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health. The results are in October's Pediatrics. The other government estimate is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and has not been formally released yet.

Greater Awareness? Yes, an awareness that the vaccines are dumbing down our population. As with the Swine Flu Shots, research the ingredients of all vaccines.

Anonymous on Oct 5, 2009 at 08:56 AM. I agree with you, but the babies start in with shots right off. I have a grand daughter that is 2 and has autism. Her fist doctor said she was soiled and so did her baby sitter right from get go, until they moved to Greenville and the first doctor that seen the little girl said he knew what was wrong with her. It is Autism. So when people see a child crying and acting up in stores/anywhere please don't just say that child is soiled because most of them are not, they have autism. Thank you.

Infant male circumcision also leads to autism! Why do you think most of the autistic children are male? Why do you think that in Europe, where 5% of population is circumcised, the rates of autistic children are VERY VERY low.

Saying that they are not there does not make the reality any less real if this were the flu you would see it on TV every night. look at the children I have my little girl and I love her but you don't know how hard it is for the family's of children with Autism. The state cut funds so we can't can't get the help she needs but look at the crap the goverment can waste money on. I paid in to the system for over 25 years I would like to see her get the help she and other children like her should have with out a lifetime of fighting with the goverment for the familys ( The goverment thinks less children I and anyone with a brain see more make the goverment listen.) It is so much cheaper to help now Vs. a group home later!
