Survey Finds Support For Abortion Weakening

A new national survey finds weakening support for and growing opposition to abortion.

The Pew Research Center poll of more than 4,000 adults suggests that less than half of Americans now support legal abortion, with opponents of abortion growing in both strength and conviction.

The poll found support for legal abortion down sharply among Catholics, Protestants, Jews and Americans of all political persuasions since Barack Obama was elected president.

Pew researcher Greg Smith says supporters and opponents of legal abortion also have become more polarized, with about 40 percent of each now saying they don't respect the opposite point of view.

i do not agree with abortion either.. a baby is a baby no matter what stage in pregnancy.. and they should find wiling parents to take the unwanted children, but laws make is SOOOO difficult to adopt a child in the US. That is why alot of couples choose to adopt outside the US - it is so much easier!

I don't think anybody specifically 'supports' abortion, but rather the choice. I'm a longtime supporter of choice, but I personally find the idea of abortion offensive. This is not a contradiction. On one hand, nobody's got a right to force a woman to do what they want with her body. It's gotta be her call. Do we really want to live in a society where it's not? We have too many unwanted kids, too many hungry kids, to turn poor women into birthing mules. No, that is not the solution. On the other hand, there has to be a better way. Abortion should be banned, but not before the government can support all these unwanted babies. A guy gets a girl pregnant, he's gotta support her. A government should do the same. Lead by example. Conservatives want to take the moral high ground? Here is their chance. Rather than force the woman to have a baby and be done with her, they need to support that baby too. Talk is cheap, but babies are anything but.

This should be a personal decision. Although not a total means for birth control and after 12 weeks should be considered illegal. They can tell the sex of a baby at 16 to 17 weeks. One can live as early as 24 weeks with life support. Though and touchy subject.

so lets start finding homes for the kids in orphanages and find some willing adopting parents, this still won't stop the irresponsible teens, 20s and addicts from having kids. Texas just began a movement to cancel their 'abstinence only' programs in school, while they are the #3 ranked for teen pregnancy, which proves that no matter what measure we take to prevent unplanned children, nothing is going to stop it from happening.

I agree with all of your posts, Obama zinged us with supporting abortions in other countries. He did this in his first 30 days. The party that doesn't want people to smoke tobacco, but pot is OK, abortions should be anytime its convienent, the party that says we will provide healthcare but we are going to limit what the seniors get treatment on.....we get it.

Bottom line people. If you are pregnant. You are growing a BABY. Call it whatever you want to justify the murder by abortion. BUT ITS A BABY NO MATTER HOW EARLY YOU ARE!

This is great news! Thank you WITN! Maybe more of America will finally wake up and realize that the baby in the womb - at any stage - is a human being. Killing that human being is murder.

Many unwanted pregnancies are a result of carelessness. If we don't want animals to get pregnant, we get them fixed. There are surgeries for humans as well - both male and female. Abortions out of convenience is wrong. If they made it exorbitantly expensive to get one, people would look at other alternatives, such as abstinence, protection, or surgery.
