Mom Leaves Hospital With Wrong Newborn

WILLISTON, N.D. -- A hospital in northwestern North Dakota is investigating how the mother of a newborn went home with the wrong baby.

Officials with the Mercy Medical Center in Williston say the mistake was discovered within an hour and the mother was quickly reunited with her own child.

Mercy Chief Financial Officer Kerry Monson would not release details about how the mix-up happened or what families were involved.

She said in a statement that hospital employees are disheartened by the incident.

She says officials are reviewing policies and procedures and will take appropriate action.

This should have never happened. There are procedures that need to be followed to the letter so that this kind of thing doesn't happen. I am an RN and I know that a lot of time we work with a short staff, but there still are polices and procedures to follow.

I know PCMH discharge procedure's are tough.(good job PCMH!) I had to sign many many paper's. Then the RN's compared all our hospital bands even my husband's.

This kind of thing happens all the time. No the "whole staff" sound not be punished; if anything safety checks need to be ensured and more people need to be hired to ease the workload on all, thereby making all more productive and reducing chances of accidents. Doesn't hurt the economy either, to get one more person or a couple more people off unemployment and other services.

Stuff like this is why I kept by baby with me and when they took hem I stood there at the window. They got sick of seeing me do it so they just left the baby with me till I got out.

This just goes to show that the patient needs to check name tags also. You just cannot trust someone else is going to get it right.
