Strong Earthquake Shakes Tokyo Area

TOKYO -- The Japan Meteorological Agency says a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 has shaken the Japanese capital of Tokyo and surrounding areas.

There have been no immediate reports of damages or casualties from the temblor, which rattled furniture and walls in Tokyo homes at 7:56 p.m. Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The agency says there is no danger of tsunami from the quake, which was centered in the Izu Islands, 192 miles south southwest of Tokyo.
