HAVELOCK MAYOR: The Super Hornets Are Not Coming

Havelock Mayor Jimmy Sanders says two jet squadrons they've been expecting for Cherry Point are not coming.

WITN's Kelsie Smith said Mayor Sanders made the announcement just before 9 a.m. Thursday.

Cherry Point has been expecting two squadrons of Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets for many years, and the economic impact that they bring. Officials say they got the word Wednesday that the Super Hornet squadrons will be stationed in California instead.

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point officials say they have not gotten word that the base will not receive two jet squadrons that they've been expecting.

WITN's Kelsie Smith says public affairs officials at the base told her Thursday morning that they have not been informed about any changes. The federal register says two squadrons from the East Coast will be transferred to the West Coast. However, other officials say the switch is happening to the Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets expected to come to Cherry Point. Instead, they'll be based in California.

Among those confirming the switch is Tom Braaten, the former commander of Cherry Point, who is now the director of the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport in New Bern.

I am shocked. This is contrary to what the governor has promised for the last 8 years, when she was lt. governor heading up the brac base consolidation for nc. She was adament about the jets coming. oops. another falsehood bev.

Please no one complain about no jobs or businesses in Havelock, because all the old folks in the Cherry Point area don't care about younger people having a decent job to survive here in the Havelock area. Think about it....every year the Schools have graduation and more young adults have no jobs to look forward to, Havelock needs a boost in the economy. The City looks bad and Newport and Morehead are attractive, the Military base MCAS don't care about Havelock, Gorvernment cares about Gorvernment. Wake up people, Havelock and eastern Carolina needs more of anything that will boost the economy. "Can we all just work together?"

I am sick of the military getting everything. I am tired of planes making my house shake at night. Poor Poor Havelock! No one in that area gets any respect unless you are military, everything is generated around them. Sure they protect this country but what about us regular folk who work just as hard. If you arent military, you get nothing around here. Im glad they didn't get the jets.

Wasn't Governor Dumb Dimples heading up the delegation to ensure that we got these squadrons?

JEB, what? After all the harrassment the Navy had over the OLF you didn't figure it out? Even Ca figured it out, so this is payback. Most of us would have welcomed the military anywhere in NC, however, there are those that would rather have noisy windmills and higher utility bills with no jobs...you cannot please everybody.

Guess Havelock and Cherry Point learned what Washington and Beaufort County figured out along time ago.....you can't believe anything the Navy tells ya!

I guess all the yankees that moved down here showed yall. They don't need the money but those of us who call eastern North Carolina home could have used the economic boost. Be careful of outsiders saying we just want to blend in.

Seems to me many of the residents of NC don't know what they want. Don't want a poultry processing operation, don't want a sulphur plant, don't want the OLF......looks like maybe they are all waiting for Wall ST. to move on down here. What kind of work do they think most of the citizens of NC are trained, educated or suited for anyway ?

You are so right. Everyone is fussing because there are no jobs in eastern NC, but every time some can potentially be created everyone is completely against it. Most folks around here cannot tie their shoes so what kind of jobs are the expecting?

In case most people forgot North Carolina has fared better than most states (if not every other state) in the most recent round of base expansions. The jets at Cherry Point was just a carrot so they could try and put the OLF somewhere in EAST North Carolina to appease the noise complainers in Virginia where the Navy has a huge presence and huge political pressures and powers. This was going to be the result no matter what happened with the OLF and is also a sign that the OLF in North Carolina is now DEAD!!!
