Report: Obama Overruled Lawyers On Libya Air War

The New York Times is reporting that President Barack Obama decided he could continue the air war in Libya without congressional approval despite views to the contrary from Justice Department and Pentagon lawyers.

The newspaper reported Friday in its online edition that the president relied instead on the opinions of other senior administration lawyers that continuing U.S. participation in the air operations against the regime of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi did not constitute "hostilities," triggering the need for congressional permission under the War Powers Resolution.

Presidents can ignore the advice of the Office of Legal Counsel, the paper reported, but rarely do so.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.

WITN, why are the articles relating to the real issues buried within 48 hours, making it difficult to discuss in the comment section, but the trivial articles that should be buried within 15 mintues and on page 15 of the newspaper stay on the main page for many days? Just wondering.....

The Repugs are just mad because none of their buddies are making billions on no bid contracts. Maybe Obama should have manipulated intelligence to do this and that would have sold better.

At least we finally have one thing he, personally, can take responsibility for. Is this the only time in his career that he voted something other than present ?? And it was a big mistake to boot

Great. The black Democrat President from Chicago did the same thing in Libya that the white Republican President from Texas did in Iraq. Started a war his citizens did not want. The moral of the story? Neither Republicans, nor Democrats, have your best interests at heart. Voting for parties and rallying along party lines is stupid. You have to know what you want out of your leaders, watch the debates, not be predisposed to vote for one or the other, hear them both out, and vote for the person you think is more apt to lead their people the way you want them to. I'm sick and tired of this whole Democrat vs. Republican nonsense. Hopefully my post sums up how stupid it is and makes sense of it to everybody.

You are wrong, Bush had congressional approval to go in, Obama didn't, BIG difference. I don't recall there being a vote of the people to go into Iraq, did I miss something? If there had been, I would be willing to bet that the majority would have approved as well. I also do not vote on party lines, I listen to all candidates but I can promise you one thing, I will vote for ANYONE but Obama this next election and I believe a large percentage of americans feel the same republican and democrat alike.
