Onslow Museum To Display Early Camp Lejeune Photos
A new Onslow County Museum is taking visitors back to the 1940s for a look at the earliest days of Camp Lejeune.
The Daily News of Jacksonville reports that museum director Lisa Whitman-Grice said the exhibit has been in the works for seven years, with a special floor plan and custom-made three-dimensional placards and displays.
Within the exhibit are displays on the War Dog Program, which sent Marines off to fight with canines for protection. Other displays tell stories of how the base trained the first black Marines and the first women Marines in the same decade.
Also highlighted are the base's beginnings, when federal surveyors selected a marshy, coastal portion of land and opted to build there, displacing the fatefully named town of Marines in the process.
