Onslow County First "Purple Heart" County In NC

A county in the east is the first in our state to be honored as a "purple heart county."

At Jacksonville city hall Monday night, county commissioners proclaimed Onslow County as a "purple heart county."

The proclamation credits the county's large population of highly decorated servicemen and women, both active and retired.

Military Order of the Purple Heart commander Verl Matthews says it's very rewarding to see the county recognize those who have served.

Several veterans were in attendance, and Matthews says a special thanks goes to commissioner Barbara Ikner for her efforts in showing the county commissioners the importance of the proclamation.
