Navy Fires At Civilian Boat, Commander Loses Job

A Navy commanding officer is out of work after the Navy says a civilian was fired at during gunnery exercises.

The Navy says Commander Mark Olson was relieved of his duty following the August incident at the Cherry Point firing range. The Morehead City-based Zig-Zag was engaged by the USS The Sullivans. The ship fired inert, or non-explosive rounds at the boat. According to report, no one was injured during the firing.

The owner of the Zig-Zag, Jimme Eady, told the Carteret News-Times the boat was not in a restricted area.

I agree. Something is amiss here. No Commanding Officer would intentionally go against orders. Where's the rest of the story?

Some of you people need to get a life. You were not there. You were not responsible for the ship and the lives on it. Have you folks already forgotten the Cole? If you have not been in such shoes, keep the old pie hole shut about his actions. Some of you people disgust me with your antimilitary attitudes. You think if we just leave people alone we would not need a military and that peace would reign all over the world. Wake up!!!! There are groups out there that want nothing more than to see the USA and ANY of our allies fall and be reborn as muslim states(your president's actions show he is possibly one of those individuals). Considering all the hazards and dangers associated with all military branches, I think they do a pretty good job.

With all military pensions and benifits about to go to the chopping block and be sharply cut as wars wind down, expect to see more of such incompetence.

I see WITN is once again on top of things... I read about this incident on no less than 4 other sites 2 weeks ago. Before long WITN will finally report on the crash of the Hindenburg followed by its report on the air raid at Pearl Harbor...

My father in law and brother in law were out of the New River inlet fishing when the Navy and Marines were training. Apparently they drifted to close and the Navy called them on the radio and told them that they needed to leave the area, but they weren't fired on. Of course had the radio been off who knows what would have happened. Especially after 9/11, they won't take chances.

Nothing like a little hate from some idiot simply because someone has a different opinion than yours or does not fall for the militarism and lies.
