NC Marines Host NASA Leader Bolden At Celebration

NASA administrator Charles Bolden is the scheduled guest speaker at the annual Montford Point Marine Association convention at Camp Lejeune.

Marine Corps spokeswoman 2ndt Lt. Sara Burns says Bolden is slated to speak Saturday evening at a black-tie banquet.

The event honors the Montford Point Marines who are the recipients of the Congressional Gold Medal.

Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos is attending, along with Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., and Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Fla.

In June, members of the 400 Montford Point Marines were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of their service in World War II and pioneering role in the Corps. The men went through a segregated boot camp known as Montford Point and later served in all-black units.
