A local master sergeant received a top honor for his heroic actions while deployed overseas.
Master Sgt. Donovan Petty, with the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion at Camp Lejeune, was awarded the Silver Star Medal Monday.
Petty was serving in Afghanistan in 2012 when his element was engaged by insurgent personnel.
The Silver Star is the third highest valor award after the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor.
Master Sgt. Petty said he was a little embarrassed to get the Silver Star because he's not a hero. He says he was just dong his job, and he was working with probably the best group of guys he's ever worked with.
The award was presented to Petty 11 a.m at the MARSOC headquarters aboard Stone Bay in Camp Lejeune.
