Tuesday at the Beirut Memorial in Jacksonville, people gathered to pay their respects 29 years after 241 American service members were killed in Beirut.
On October 23, 1983, suicide bombers hit 2 buildings housing American and French servicemen. At the memorial in Jacksonville Tuesday, friends and family of those who died in the terrorist attacks came to honor their loved ones. Retired Marine, Bob Jordan, survived the Beirut bombing. He says the explosion woke him up and knocked over doors and blew in windows where he was staying.
"What had been a 4 story building was now a pile of rubble about 20 feet high and the debris was about 4 feet deep. Within that debris were bodies and body parts," said Jordan
Every year on October 23rd, hundreds of people come to the Jacksonville memorial to look at the names on the wall of those who died, and say a prayer and remember the fallen.
