This weekend, thousands of people are set to descend on the Charlotte Motor Speedway for a homecoming honoring those who were never truly given one. It's been 40-years since Vietnam Veterans came home, but this time, organizers want a proper, patriotic homecoming.

Veterans we talked with in Jacksonville are on both sides of the fence on this event. Some veterans say they're happy Vietnam warriors will be properly honored for their serivce. But some say they don't care to go because it's too late and any effort now cannot undo the past.

Nevertheless, members of the Jacksonville chapter of Rolling Thunder set out Friday to head to Charlotte. Paul Levesque of Rolling Thunder said, "It's kind of refreshing for me to know that we're still being remembered. And the sacrifices that some of them have made were not in vain."

The Jacksonville members will be taking to the track, taking one lap around as an honorary opening to the ceremony this weekend.

The event is sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters and includes a special Vietnam Veterans recognition event airing on WITN at 3:00 P.M. Saturday afternoon.

Previous Story:

March 30, 1972 is the date all U.S. combat and support personnel withdrew from Vietnam.

They returned home without any fanfare or appreciation.

Last year, the U.S. Senate designated March 30th as Welcome Home Vietnam Vets Day, so they can get the appreciation they deserve for their sacrifice.

Friday, veterans from our state plan to make that trek to the Charlotte Motor Speedway, just one of many place across the country celebrating this new Vietnam Veteran's Day .

Members of Rolling Thunder out of Jacksonville are heading up to Charlotte for the Vietnam Veteran's Welcome Home Celebration.
