A North Carolina soldier who was arrested after a powerful explosive was found in his luggage at a Texas airport could soon learn whether he'll be released from federal custody.
Trey Scott Atwater is scheduled to appear in court Friday in Midland. Last weekend, security screeners at Midland International Airport found C4 explosives in his carry-on bag.
C4 is used in Iraq and Afghanistan to blow hinges off doors or destroy unexploded ordinance.
According to court documents, Atwater told the FBI that he's a demolitions expert and returned from Afghanistan in April. He says his Army special forces team always carried C4, but he didn't know it was in his bag.
The 30-year-old grew up in Midland and was on his way to Fort Bragg, his post in North Carolina.
