A small but excited crowd is at Fort Bragg for the U.S. military's first-ever event geared toward atheists and other nonbelievers.
Rainy weather seemed likely to dash organizers' hopes of a crowd of 5,000, but speakers and bands along with carnival games still went ahead as planned in a large parade field at one of the nation's largest military posts.
Richard Dawkins, the famed British atheist who is the event's headline speaker, says the goal of the Rock Beyond Belief is not to antagonize religious believers but to show that atheists and other secular believers have a place in institutions like the military.
The concert was organized following an event at Bragg in 2010 sponsored by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
