Federal Agency Begins Survey About Lejeune Water

A federal survey of diseases that may be related to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune is beginning this week as officials investigate the exposure of as many as 1 million people to toxins over three decades.

The Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry will send surveys to more than 300,000 people who lived or worked at the Marine base or at Camp Pendleton, Calif., before 1986 so responses can be compared. Agency Director Christopher Portier says ATSDR also will conduct an internal survey that will provide individuals with their level of exposure to various chemicals.

Officials believe as many as 1 million people may have been exposed to tainted water before the wells were closed more than 20 years ago.
