Fayetteville Native Killed In Afghanistan

A 21-year-old Fort Wainwright soldier has been killed in Afghanistan, dying from injuries from an improvised device explosion that hit his unit while on patrol.

The Army says Specialist Calvin Matthew Pereda of Fayetteville, N.C., died Saturday. His next of kin have been notified.

According to the Army's release, two other soldiers were injured during the attack, which happened when the unit was hit by an improvised explosive device while on patrol.

Pereda joined the Army in March 2010. He arrived in Alaska on August 2010. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright. His 4,000-soldier brigade deployed for a one-year tour in Afghanistan this past April.
