'Doomsday' Defense Cuts Loom Large For Select 12

For the dozen lawmakers given the task of producing a deficit-cutting plan, the threatened "doomsday" defense cuts hit close to home.

The six Republicans and six Democrats represent states where the biggest military contractors -- Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics Corp., Raytheon Co. and Boeing Co. -- build missiles, aircraft, jet fighters and tanks while employing tens of thousands of workers.

The potential for $500 billion more in defense cuts could force the Pentagon to cancel or scale back multibillion-dollar weapons programs. That could translate into significant layoffs in a fragile economy, generate millions less in tax revenues for local governments and upend lucrative company contracts with foreign nations.

With all the countries that hate us, cutting military funding is what they want. Instead, cut the freeloaders in this country and the expense accounts of congress and the so-called president and his brood. Our country is ran by idiots, and self-serving thugs.

Russia is selling subs to any nation that can gather up the money to buy them. These subs are cheap, diesel electic and can quietly sit off OUR COASTS. Imagine a biological weapon fired from a sub into New York City or Washington DC. There is NO WAY to stop such an attack. We need our military to be top notch at all times. Yes, I do agree there is way too much waste and corruption with military contractors and the like. Let's streamline the process, make it all more obvious to our leaders and auditors. But cut all programs before cutting too much from the military budgets.

It is extremely difficult to discuss military affairs with people who neither understand nor care about their country. We do not have "bases all over the world" and "pay rent on all of them" and many comments like that. We should bring our troops home, put them on our borders and let the world go bye bye. Surprise, surprise. This was written before one caustic remark had been read. You ladies and gentlemen have given me the opportunity to see N.C. education at work.

Military weapons must be our first priority. Check some pictures after we hit Japan and Germany in WW II.Then quadruple that when we use hydrogen bombs and chemical, biological, radiological weapons. This was and is so serious that we have no country left. Do not think you want your body as a shadow on the wall of a building. Or your head hanging in a tree with your torso on the ground. The defense of America is being attacked every day with electronic devices so accurate, a missile can be sent through any one of your windows at almost our enemies will. They have submarines and can attack at any time. Get ready, they will be here earlier than you think. If three men in an aircraft (not using bombs) can take down a tremendous building, think what they can do with chemical and bacterialogical weapons.

Thank goodness they set up a group destined to fail(like the one to figure out the financial collapse), and the military will finally get a bigger much needed cut!! US spends more on military than ALL the industrialized countries combined!! They can continue to blame the other party!! We've got bases ALL OVER the world and pay rent at them!!! Continue to get involved in conflicts that are NOT true dangers to our national security e.g. Korea, Vietnam, Iraq x 2, Afghanistan, etc. Remember what was said for each one, "if we don't fight them over there, we'll have to fight them here"!! I still can't find a good Korean nor Vietnamese resturant!! We didn't win those wars did we!! We need to look out for the US 1st!! Stop being the world's policeman!!! Due to 2nd admendment we have well armed militias!!! Hey Taliban, when you come across the Tar River I've got something waiting for you!!! you'll get a BANG out of it! Many other programs that need cutting too!!!

We need to spend money on infrastructure not weapons. We have tripled our military budget since the late 1990s. Did that keep 9/11 from happening? Since all the Repugnants have taken the "no tax pledge" and they are unwilling to compromise in any way, this is a good way to get our enormous military budget cut. The military industrial complex in this country, which we were warned about long ago by President Eisenhower, has gotten totally out of hand. The Repugnants are going to have to compromise or risk infuriating the weapons makers who funnel them so much money. Should be interesting.
