The Department of Justice says a civilian from Beulaville working aboard Camp Lejeune has been sentenced for lying to get workers compensation benefits. Michael Lanier, 57, pled guilty in October to making false and fraudulent statements in his application for receipt of Federal Employment Workers Compensation Benefits.
Lanier was accused of submitted false information that he was not working for an employer, self-employed, involved in a business enterprise, or performing volunteer work in order to get benefits from the Department of Labor Office of Workers Compensation Programs. That agency provides assistance to federal civilian employees who suffer an on-the-job or workrelated injury or illness. Federal prosecutors say Lanier collected money from the agency even though had been working. His jobs included property manager and deliver driver for two local pharmacies, a
sales representative and manager in a used car sales business, and a vehicle dismantler and general worker in a vehicle scrapping business.
Lanier was sentenced to five years probation, six months home detention with electronic monitoring, and payment of $30,000 restitution to the Department of Labor Office of Workers Compensation Programs.
