Researchers at the Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital have almost finished a study that could determine new treatment for troops suffering from a traumatic brain injury.
The Daily News of Jacksonville reported that the Defense Department study began in early summer at Camp Lejeune and three other military installations. In the study, researchers administer pure oxygen in hyperbaric chambers to military subjects with TBI. The Navy also uses that treatment for diving-related injuries.
Eight Lejeune troops with TBI have participated in the research, which includes one-hour oxygen interventions five days a week, for 40 sessions in all.
Lt. Cmdr. Jason Gordon says the researchers plan to finish recruiting for the study around January, though it's not yet clear when the research will conclude. He's an assistant investigator with the study.
