Budget, Debt Worries Plague Troops

A half a world away from the Capitol Hill deadlock, the economy and debt crisis are weighing heavily on U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

And the top question on their minds Saturday even as bombings rocked the city around them, was one the top U.S. military officer couldn't answer: Will we get paid?

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told a group of soldiers that he doesn't know.

He says he believes that the troops will eventually be paid what they are owed for their service. Still he acknowledges that waiting for their money would be difficult for troops who live paycheck to paycheck.

Questions on military spending and the how the ongoing budget struggles will impact them dominated Mullen's meetings with U.S. service men and women.

It wasn't enough to have granny worrying about her social security check. Now they are using the soldiers over seas. Unbelievable how low they are willing to go!

it amazes me that when the Dems don't have conmlete control, they the replublicans to compromise, but when they have conplete control, they don't care what the replubicans think or want. can;t wait for 2012 election.

What you're saying is operationally false based on the article. If the Democrats did not compromise, they would have passed a budget before any of this was up for discussion. Agreeing to extend the Bush era tax cuts is also a ground-breaking compromise. Republicans are demanding to march straight to the United States Constitution during a moment of economic duress. That's an example of no compromise.

Ummm I wonder what Boehner told the Republicans that did not want to support his bill. He took them in a room and spoke with them separately, they came out and went to prayer, extremely upset. You don't think he threatened them do you? GANSTA STYLE POLITICS. Then he RAMMED HIS BILL DOWN THEIR THROATS!!!!You think Murdoch was not the only one tapping phone calls?

I think it's great that you write like this, with the name calling and all. It really reinforces the irony when you're insulting younger folks by calling them names. A classic tactic when you're losing a debate is to blame a group's thinking on a comic-book villain / media overlord. Is that what you're doing?

Here's one for you, AMD. That is right. You and your flag waving minions can wave that symbol in everyone's face, but if someone has a different opinion or does not buy the patriotic nonsense or lies, then they are seen as unpatriotic or, oh heaven forbid, unamerican.

The word you are looking for is dissent. Aparently it is only patriotic if you do it to a Republican. When you do it to Obama it is racism. If you don't buy the "patriotic nonsense", want to fundamentally change the country, think the system is broken and unfixable and take everyone elses side but ours then yes you are unpatriotic and un-American.

If its not bad enough, our military families live daily with the possibility that their loved one in military service may make the ultimate sacrifice for this country. But now they have to worry if they can pay their bills and feed their families. It is amazing what our countries leaders see as priorities. These men live daily in jeopardy and have to be at the top of their game while on foreign soil. Thanks to our countries leadership, our fighting men are distracted because their families are being trampled on by the government they are fighting for. How ironic.

I simply say "So what"? If your "heroes" (notice the correct spelling of plural form of that noun)are defending my so-called "freedom", what are they doing overseas? You made the same tired "If it wasn't for our troops, you wouldn't have freedom" statement again, as so many flag waving cheerleaders have before. No. Actually, I owe my freedom to myself. I am so tired of people like you trying to tell me how I should think and that I should bow in the presence of a certain section of the population. I challenge you to read or watch the movie "All Quiet On The Western Front" when you want to wave the flag in someone's face again.

Dont put this blame on the Tea Party and Republicans, this budget was due last year before they were even elected. The Democrats refused to even submit a budget for fear that the American people would use it against them during mid-term elections. They were more worried about keeping their jobs, than they were about doing their jobs. Obama is a failure as a leader.

What? The Republicans are the ones afraid of losing their jobs because they want to remain loyal the the wealthy and big business. The Democrats DID NOT take an oath to one specific group of people. They took an oath to this country.

The media is putting the blame on Republicans and doing everything it can to make it look like the Democrats are willing to compromise no matter how untrue it is, I think your theory is not founded in reality. Even James Carville admitted they weren't acting like they cared if they got re-elected. Sometimes doing what is right makes you unpopular.

Congress needs to stop worrying about their paychecks and get their feet out of their butts and make a decision. This is ridiculous! Maybe if we cut their salary by a third it would help take some of the debt down!
