Cherry Point Marine Found Dead In Barracks

A Cherry Point Marine was found dead in his barracks room at the Havelock Marine Corps Air Station Wednesday afternoon.

Lance Corporal Daniel W. Sweeney, age 20 of Minnesota, was pronounced dead by emergency medical treatment personnel at 3:21 p.m. after duty Marines found him during a barracks inspection at 3:10 p.m.

The cause of Sweeney's death is under investigation.

Sweeney was assigned to Marine Attack Training Squadron 203 (VMAT-203), 2d Marine Aircraft Wing.

He served in the Marine Corps for one year and seven months as an AV-8B Aircraft Mechanic. He entered active-duty enlisted service from Minneapolis, MN in Sept 2008.

Sweeney graduated Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, CA, followed by Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton, CA. He attended Aviation Machinist Mate School at Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC), Naval Air Station Pensacola, FL, prior to attending the AV-8B Aircraft Mechanic Organizational Maintenance School at the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training (CNATT) here, and subsequently assigned to VMAT-203.

Sweeney had not served overseas.

His awards included the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

    Dan was an amazing friend and a great person. He is sorely missed by all of us. Exspecially myself. I wish his family well and am truely sorry for their loss.
