New information from the war in Afghanistan. United States Marines, including some from Camp Lejeune have mounted an assault to seize the Taliban held town of Dahaneh in southern Afghanistan.
The force began their assault before dawn with Marines entering the town as others battled militants in the surrounding mountains. Journalists traveling with the first wave said the Marines were met with small arms, mortar, and rocket-propelled grenade fire.
Video from the town showed the Marines detonating a wall inside the compound before exchanging more gunfire with Taliban forces from the roof top of a building within the town. Marines have captured several suspects and seized about 66 pounds of opium.
The Marine Expeditionary Brigade involved in Operation Eastern Resolve 2 includes forces from Camp Lejeune. They are fighting to gain control of the area before next week's presidential elections.
