A woman whose husband was stationed at a North Carolina base has filed a lawsuit alleging the government knowingly exposed hundreds of thousands of Marines to highly contaminated drinking water.
The lawsuit on behalf of 45-year-old Laura Jones was filed Saturday in U.S. District Court in Raleigh. The lawsuit said Jones now lives in Iowa and suffers from lymphoma.
Attorneys for Jones said the chemicals in the water at Camp Lejeune caused numerous health problems including cancers, reproductive disorders and birth defects. Health officials think as many as 1 million people may have been exposed.
A government report released earlier this month found contaminated drinking water at Camp Lejeune can't definitively be linked to health problems. A spokesman for the Marines didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.
