Helping Troops "Beat The Heat"

We're not the only ones trying to beat the heat with the warm summer temperatures on the way. So are our troops overseas.

The North Carolina branch of "Give-2- The Troops," based in Greenville, says there are approximately 185,000 troops deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, where temperatures can reach over 120 degrees during the summer months.

The organization is now collecting items for care packages for deployed troops in its "Beat the Heat" campaign. Items needed include snacks such as jerky, tuna in pouches, protein powdered drink mixes, nuts, granola bars, dried fruit, single serving drink mixes to add to bottled water, dry-release tee shirts, white socks, small electric fans, cool wraps, eye drops, chapstick, DVDs, sports equipment and toiletries. Monetary donations are also needed for postal costs.

The organization can ship a box for 10-15 members of a troop for $20.00

Items can be mailed or delivered to the NC Branch, Give2thetroops 3109 Landmark St, Greenville NC. For more information call 252-321-8227.

That's what the VFW, the American Legion, and all of these other glorified lobby groups should be doing instead of waving the flag in everyone's faces. The troops don't need these things-they need to be brought home!
