UPDATED: PETA Protest Near Camp Lejeune

A handful of activists showed up in Jackonville Monday afternoon to protest what they say is animal cruelty at Camp Lejeune.

PETA, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, held the protest on Lejeune Boulevard at Hargett Street.

The group originally wanted to stand at the much more visible intersection of Western & Lejeune Boulevards, but Jacksonville police said that was a safety concern.

The group says the protest is in response to a whistleblower's report that the base is using live goats as "stand-ins" for wounded troops in training, and that the goats end up getting killed.

"Killing goats in training exercises is cruel, antiquated, and a disservice to our soldiers, who deserve to be treated by medics who have been trained with the best methods available," PETA Director of Laboratory Investigations Kathy Guillermo said in a press release posted on the PETA website.

PETA says the alleged use of goats would violate the Department of
Defense's own animal welfare regulation; PETA says that regulation requires the use of non-animal methods when such methods are available.

Late Monday a Camp Lejeune spokesman said the base is drafting a letter in response to one PETA sent the base last month. The spokesman says the base does not conduct live tissue training, but it hires a private contractor to provide that training. (There is a link to the PETA letter at the top of this story)

I think it is absolutely facinating that the people who protest against killing animals, not only kill 95% of the animals that come into their care, but also advocate abortion. Can anyone out there explain this to me please? Maybe I am missing the point...

Help.. a year ago. I started a project at camp lejeune behind the officer's club. In coordinayion and with the approval of the officer's club manager, I started to capture and spay or neuter cats and get their rabies shots, Of course I soon ran out of money, so I joined a group from Topsail Island that believes in this approach to limiting and caring for the cat populations. This year the new BOQ manager, Mr. Gallagher had me informed to stop feeding in some of the areas, . So I changed areas. the only conflicting spot was a spot in one building where a steam pipe comes and had been the home of a seven yeat inhabitant and mama cat,. She recently had a litter of kittens and this delayed my trapping.. My husband also had surgery which caused a brief interruption Thios past Friday I went to feed them and found several little kitty faces pressed against the only exit from under the building which had been blocked by a piece of wire fixed in place. Please call me 910-388 1247 help

Maybe Nancy Pelosi will share some of her 30 million reserved for the marsh mouse and save the east coast goat. Marsh mice and goats at least have more protection than the human baby inutero thanks to liberal wacko politicians.

PETA Mary, that had to be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard "what if a goat was your child", If that were the case you would be grazing on grass saying "Bahhhhhh" as the farmer walked by you! PETA is about as "ethical" as Bin Laden! Matter of fact, I would rather TRUST Bin Laden because atleast he is CLEAR about his intentions! PETA trys to pretend to "care" about animals all while killing them and dumping them in dumpsters behind grocery stores 20 minutes after they picked them up from the shelter! PETA is MORE CONCERNED with people OWNING animals than it is concerned with the animals welfare itself. All PETA wants to do is somehow liberate all animals in captivity even if it means killing them all.

Here's an article I found interesting. It tells how PETA euthanize 95% of the adoptable animals in its care last year. http://www.consumerfreedom.com/pressRelease_detail.cfm/release/258

If the killing of goats is necessarry in training our Marines so that they can quickly and properly respond in an emergency situation, be it here or overseas, I am all for it. As a Marine wife, the life of my husband and his men is far more valuable than the life of any animal.

More PETA people showed up on this board than the actual protest. What a pathetic "organization".
