Assumption Of Command Ceremony At Camp Lejeune

The Marine Corps is now shifting its focus from Iraq to Afghanistan, after the president's order last month.

Monday an assumption of command ceremony was held at Camp Lejeune to announce the deployment soon of 8,000 Marines to Afghanistan. Four-thousand of those Marines, part of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, come from Camp Lejeune.

The commander of the unit is General Lawrence Nicholson. Nicholson says Marines will head into southern Afghanistan where the the Taliban is located. He says they will send ground and air units into the country, with the hopes of building relationships with the Afghan forces to help accomplish the mission.
