A soldier from Eastern Carolina killed in Afghanistan last September was honored with a memorial Friday afternoon.

Jennifer Tripp cut the ribbon on a bench dedicated to honor her son at the Veteran's Memorial Park in Washington.

Private Michael Murdock was killed in action on September 11th this past year.

The Mayor of Washington, Judy Jennette, presented family members with a white rose. Tripp says her son is an American hero.

Tripp says she hopes the memorial will remind everyone the sacrifices our service men and women make to protect our country.

Private Michael Murdock made the ultimate sacrifice. Some one's life has changed because of your presence in Afghanistan. Your mother raised a very brave and honorable son... I wish I could have had the pleasure of shaking your hand. You have you highest rank now... save a place for your mother. .. She is beautiful, healthy and youthful looking... so you won't see her anytime soon I hope... hold that seat tight. RIP
