Decorated Navy Corpsman Hit By Bullet, Dies At Camp Lejeune

Jacksonville, NC -- A Navy corpsman from Camp Lejeune died Monday after being hit by a bullet, according to base officials.

Camp Lejeune officials tell WITN 29-year-old Petty Officer 2nd Class Andrew J. King, originally from Black Forest, Colorado, was hit by a stray bullet or ricochet at the Stones Bay shooting range aboard the Jacksonville Base Monday.

Officials say King was on duty at the range, while Marines were shooting rounds in training.

King was flown to the Naval Hospital on base where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death has not been determined. Base officials are investigating how King was fatally injured. As of Thursday morning, there is no update on that investigation according to base officials.

King, part of the 2nd Marine Expeditiionary Force Headquarters Group,
joined the Navy in 1996.

King's awards include the three Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals, three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals with Combat V, the Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, three Good Conduct Medals, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, four Sea Service Deployment Ribbons and the Navy and Marine Corps Overseas service Ribbon.
