A Tale Of The Second World War

A World War II veteran who fought from island to island in the Pacific is sharing his experiences with Marines headed overseas.

Ken O'Donnell, president of the Marine Corps Raider Association and former member of the 4th Raider Battalion, will talk Wednesday to the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit. Marine Raiders operated behind enemy lines.

The units are the first U.S. Special Operations forces to see combat in World War II.

The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit will deploy this spring, although its destination isn't clear.

My father served on the U.S.S. Crosby APD-17 during WWII. That ship was a "fast transport", a WW I destroyer converted to a fast transport for the purpose of transporting Marine Raiders. The ship was one of the Green Dragons and saw action from Guatacanal through the Solomons, New Guinea, the Phillipines, and Okinowa. According to my Dad the relationship between "their" Marines and the sailors on the ship was very close. My Dad was a hero to me and so is this man and anyone who served in that war, or any other war. I've got a former boss who is an Iwo Jima Marine vet and another who saw action in Africa and Europe. My Dad's gone, but there are a few WW II vets left. If you know one, go talk to him and listen. Go meet that walking piece of history before he's gone. The men and women that served in that and any other war, including Iraq and Afganistan, are people that "walk the walk", so the rest of us can sleep safe in our beds at night. I'd love to meet Mr. O'Donnell.
