Blackwater, Currituck County Agree To Buffer Zone

Blackwater Worldwide has agreed to a mile-wide buffer zone between new firing ranges and homes near its rural property in northeastern North Carolina.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported the buffer must be approved next month by the Currituck County Board of Commissioners.

The county planning board approved the buffer last week.

Most of Blackwater's facilities are in neighboring Camden County.

Some residents of Currituck County complained after four Blackwater firing ranges, driving tracks and other facilities were mistakenly built across the county line.

Maps used during public hearings for the Navy's proposed jet practice landing field revealed the mistake.

Blackwater asked that the ranges be allowed to stay and agreed to the buffer zone.
